A Historic Day at Healy-Murphy!

On March 2, students, staff, donors and friends of Healy-Murphy came out to celebrate the renovation of our historic campus. Executive Director Douglas J. Watson led the ceremony dedicating the Peter Claver Administration Building, the Ewing Halsell Building and the Kym & George Rapier Building. Local leaders including Councilwoman Ivy Taylor and Congressman Lloyd Doggett addressed the crowd, emphasizing the role of education as the foundation for a strong community.

2007 HMC graduate Roosevelt Showers, who will soon graduate from Incarnate Word University, spoke about why he attended Healy-Murphy, saying, "I came to school every day because the class sizes were small, and I knew that I would have the opportunity to learn on a one-on-one basis. I came to school because I found appreciation in the fact that I could get seconds at lunch if I pleased…I came to school every day because I knew that if I worked hard, I could get ahead. I came to school everyday because I knew that, here, I had people who truly cared about my future."

Healy-Murphy Center also recognized the generous support of the Greehey Family Foundation, Valero Energy Foundation, H-E-B, the Myra Stafford Pryor Trust, Capital One Bank, Frost Bank, NuStar Energy Foundation, Shield-Ayres Foundation, Gambrinus Company, Luke & Merle Soules Foundation, and numerous generous individuals. The renovations are the result of the $4.6 million Restoring Hope A Brighter Future Capital Campaign. The major upgrades in infrastructure and technology will allow Healy-Murphy to continue to provide compassionate support to youth-in-crisis through individualized curriculum, early childhood education, and essential support services.
